Ecotourism destination in Batang Serangan, Langkat Regency is located at the junction of two majestic rivers, Buluh and Batang and surrounded by Gunung Leuser National Park. Although Tangkahan is famous for its resident animals – Sumatran elephants, it has more than that: 17,000 hectares of stunning and untouched rainforest with ancient trees, wild primates such as orangutans, waterfalls, caves, and hot springs that invite you to explore every corner of this friendly village and its surroundings.
Tangkahan herd counts 9 endangered Sumatran elephants in good health, all rescued from human-elephant conflict in North Sumatra. The herd is trained and used for forest patrol and species conservation.
Only 3 hours drive from Medan, this is a perfect getaway and place to relax, admire nature, and experience the adventure of a lifetime.
The small village of Tangkahan was founded when the community decided to stop illegal logging in the Leuser area that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s and develop the area into a sustainable ecotourism destination.
Realizing the environmental damage that had been done, the community decided to change course and agreed to permanent regulations prohibiting illegal logging. In 2001 they founded the Tangkahan Tourist Institute and formed a Conservation Response Unit that accepts rescued Sumatran elephants who are trained with a team of mahouts to patrol and protect the forest.
